Habitation Therapy
This program is designed to help your child quit negative oral habits such as thumb/finger sucking or nail biting in a positive and fun manner without the use of punitive habit appliances.
It typically consists of four appointments over three weeks with the majority of patients eliminating the habit in the first week.
This extremely effective program is designed to build confidence and self esteem.

Myofunctional Therapy
An in depth initial assessment is performed on the first visit to identify any Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMD) that may exist, and determine an appropriate time to start therapy.
The length of therapy required varies from one individual to the next. The severity of the OMD and the willingness and compliance of the individual in the program all affect how long therapy will last.
If the individual has a negative oral habit, the habit elimination program is completed prior to initiating the Myofunctional Program.

Pre and Post-Frenectomy Therapy
Tongue ties are the most common misdiagnosed and untreated oral conditions that can lead to abnormal facial development and breathing if not treated early.
Barbara specializes in diagnosing tongue and lip ties as well as other tethered oral tissues. Once diagnosed, Pre-Frenectomy Myofunctional Therapy is initiated to begin increasing mobility and strength of the tongue for a more successful surgery. Once myofunctional therapy clearance is given, the patient is referred to a frenectomy provider.
Exercises are given to promote tongue strength, mobility, and to establish a correct resting posture.
The Goals & Benefits of Therapy
Reinforce and establish a resting posture of the tongue away from the teeth, against the hard palette.
Establish appropriate oral and facial muscle patterns that promote proper chewing and eating.
Retrain oral, lingual and facial muscles to the correct resting posture of the tongue, lips and jaw.
Eliminate digit-sucking behaviours to facilitate normal growth of palatal arch.
Prevent relapses after orthodontic treatment.
Eliminate open-mouth posture, reduce open bite and overjet.
Improve nasal breathing patterns.
Improve oral hygiene.
Eliminate dry mouth condition or xerostomia.
Create an oral environment that creates favorable conditions for development of dentition.
Is Treatment Necessary?
Let’s meet and discuss course treatment that makes sense for you. A multi-disciplinary approach is essential and will be applied if necessary. I am proactive in preventing major issues in the present and the future when I am able to get involved early.
Fees
Every treatment plan is customized to the individual. A set number of treatments is not given as every case is unique and some may take longer than others to regain correct oral function.
The cost per session can range from $80 to $180 per visit as followed by the Alberta Dental Association fee guide. We do not direct bill insurance companies but do provide receipts with dental coding for you to submit to your insurance company.
Dr. German Ramirez, a world expert in orthodontics and pediatrics, put together an amazing video explaining on patients develop crooked teeth and how this can be prevented and treated. Often times breathing is not evaluated and this video illustrates the importance of nasal breathing.
